The Festival de Cannes is also composed of the special jury of the awards, the Palme d’Or. The jury is composed of celebrities, personalities, critics, writers, and journalists from all around the world, who are tasked with evaluating the film. In addition, the jurors are presented with a personalized list of films that they can assess as to which film they prefer, which is forwarded to them by the international jury. The Palme d’Or jury consists of 100 members who are separated into 10 groups of 20 to read and vote at the same time on the shortlist. The winning film then receives the Palme d’Or award, the Cannes Film Festival’s highest prize. There have been four inaugural Palme d’Or awards given out since the festival’s creation in 1939. The first award was given to La Chartreuse de Parme by René Clair. The Palme d’Or category is also one of the most highly contested. The other categories are the Cinéfondation, the Grand Prix, and the Best Director, as well as the other categories within the “Un Certain Regard” section, which is for independent filmmakers.
